Pegula to Face Kenin in All-American Charleston Open Final
Top-seeded Jessica Pegula battled past No. 9 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 on Saturday to book her place in the Charleston Open final, where she’ll meet fellow American Sofia Kenin in a historic all-U.S. championship match.
Pegula twice came back from a break down in the deciding set and clinched the win on her second match point after two hours and 21 minutes of play. The victory marked Pegula’s tour-leading 24th win of the season and her first trip to the final in Charleston.
Kenin, meanwhile, advanced more easily after her semifinal opponent, No. 8 Amanda Anisimova, was forced to retire due to a right hip injury. Kenin was up 5-2 in the first set at the time.
Sunday’s final marks the first All-American final in Charleston since 1990, when Martina Navratilova defeated Jennifer Capriati.
