Katie Volynets Dominates in First-Round Victory

Katie Volynets delivered a flawless performance Monday at the Credit One Charleston Open, needing just 55 minutes to blank Canadian qualifier Katherine Sebov 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round. The 23-year-old Californian was in total command from start to finish, landing 87 percent of her first serves and winning 81 percent of those points. Volynets didn’t face a single break point as she advanced to the second round without dropping a game.

Strong Day for American Players

Volynets wasn’t the only American to shine on Day 1 in Charleston. Robin Montgomery cruised past Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria 6-1, 6-3, while Caroline Dolehide defeated Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto 6-4, 6-1 with relative ease. Caty McNally added to the U.S. success, rallying from a set down to eliminate Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a gritty comeback.

International Contenders Move On

Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic continued her comeback with a solid win, while France’s Varvara Gracheva and Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova and Polina Kudermetova all advanced to the next round. The Kudermetova sisters could be on track for a potential showdown later in the tournament.
