Pegula, Anisimova, Kenin Lead American Charge in Charleston Semifinals

Top-seeded Jessica Pegula, eighth seed Amanda Anisimova, and 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin each won on Friday to secure semifinal berths at the Credit One Charleston Open, giving the United States three of the four remaining spots.

Pegula overcame a sluggish start to rally past No. 7 seed Danielle Collins 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. After dropping the opening set, Pegula adjusted her rhythm and reeled off 12 of the final 15 games to complete the comeback.

Anisimova, seeded eighth, knocked out fourth-seeded American Emma Navarro in straight sets 7-5, 7-6 (1), showing poise in closing out a tight second-set tiebreak. She will now face Kenin, who beat No. 14 Anna Kalinskaya of Russia 6-4, 6-3 in a composed performance.

Pegula’s semifinal opponent will be ninth-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia, who upset third seed Qinwen Zheng of China 6-1, 6-4. Alexandrova dominated the opening set and never trailed in the second.
