WTA roundup: Top seed Qinwen Zheng reaches Tokyo quarters

Top-seeded Qinwen Zheng of China rallied from a 5-4 deficit in the first set, winning the next nine games to defeat Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima 7-5, 6-0. Zheng advanced to the quarterfinals in Tokyo, where she will face No. 8 seed Leylah Fernandez of Canada.

Third-seeded Daria Kasatkina of Russia also advanced with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over McCartney Kessler. Kasatkina will meet Sofia Kenin next, after Kenin outlasted Denmark’s Clara Tauson in a marathon 6-7 (8), 6-4, 7-6 (6) battle lasting 2 hours and 51 minutes. No. 9 seed Katie Boulter cruised past Japan’s Kyoka Okamura 6-1, 6-2 in just 69 minutes.

Top seed Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic moved into the quarterfinals with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 win over Alycia Parks. Siniakova saved all seven break points she faced and will next play Bernarda Pera, who dispatched China’s Shuai Zhang 6-2, 6-2.

No. 2 seed Marie Bouzkova wasn’t as lucky, falling to Caroline Dolehide 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (6) in a grueling 3-hour, 18-minute match. In another upset, Thailand’s Manachaya Sawangkaew stunned No. 3 seed Yue Yuan of China 6-2, 6-3 in just 67 minutes.
