WTA roundup: Yuan Yue rallies to win in Hong Kong

In a thrilling comeback, No. 6 seed Yuan Yue rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the second set to take down former world No. 1 Simona Halep 6-3, 6-3. Yue fired 22 winners against Halep, committing only 12 unforced errors in a performance that sent her to the second round.

The home crowd cheered on China’s Wang Xiyu, who also staged a comeback, overturning a 3-1 deficit in the second set to win against American qualifier Hina Inoue 6-3, 7-6 (2). Additionally, Chinese qualifier Shi Han defeated Margarita Gasparyan in straight sets.

However, it wasn’t a lucky day for all the home players. No. 4 Xinyu Wang couldn’t hold onto her lead, ultimately falling to France’s Jessika Ponchet, who surged to a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory. Australian Priscilla Hon and Bernarda Pera also advanced.

Jiangxi Open

In Jiujiang, China, Elena Pridankina of Russia earned her first WTA main-draw victory by defeating Germany’s Ella Seidel 6-3, 7-6 (6). Pridankina saved three set points in the second set to secure her win at just 19 years of age, while ranked a career-high No. 179.

Top seed Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic had to overcome an early break in each set but managed to close out Alexandra Eala of the Philippines 7-5, 7-6 (4). In a dramatic turnaround, No. 5 seed Kamilla Rakhimova of Russia overcame a 5-1 third-set deficit against Petra Martic, winning six straight games to prevail 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 without facing match point.

Other Monday winners included No. 4 seed Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain, who defeated Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan in straight sets, and No. 6 seed Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands, who edged out Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-3. Tamara Korpatsch of Germany and Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic also moved on to the next round.
