The Zurich Classic is one of the more unique events on the PGA Tour. It got underway yesterday with Round 1 from TPC Louisiana, in New Orleans. The Zurich Classic changed its format in 2017 to become a team event with eighty pairs of golfers invited. One team member is chosen based upon the Tour priority rankings. The other team member must be a PGA Tour member or earn entry via a sponsor exemption.
The Zurich Classic team event has unique scoring as well. The first and third rounds of play use what’s called fourball, or best ball, scoring. In this format, each hole is scored by the golfer who had the lowest score. The second and fourth rounds are played using alternate shots by the golfers.
Four Teams Tied for the Lead at Zurich Classic
Round 1 of the Zurich Classic ended with four teams tied at the top of the leaderboard. Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are one of the four teams currently leading the Zurich Classic. The pair was one of the favorites to win the event. McIlroy and Lowry were given +750 odds to win the event.
The overall favorite to win the Zurich Classic was the team of Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele at +450 odds. The pair actually won this event two years ago, shooting a 29-under par. The team of Will Zalatoris and Sahith Theegala is also in the mix with the same odds (+750) as McIlroy and Lowry.
Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard, Patton Kizzire and Ben Kohles, and Aaron Ray and David Lipsky are the other three teams tied with McIlroy and Lowry for the Zurich Classic lead. The Rai-Lipsky pair will be out first today with a tee time of 9:31 a.m. McIlroy and Lowry follow at 9:53 a.m. The other teams won’t be out until the afternoon at today’s Zurich Classic.
